Professor Jonathan Drezner takes up his post for specialist BMJ journal in January
Professor Jonathan Drezner, a family medicine doctor specialising in sports medicine, has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, one of more than 70 specialist journals published by BMJ.
Professor Drezner will take up his post in January 2021, succeeding Professor Karim Khan, Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health & Arthritis (IMHA), who has been Editor-in-Chief since 2008.
Jonathan Drezner is currently a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, and the Director of the Center for Sports Cardiology at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. He is the Head Medical Team Physician for the American football NFL team, Seattle Seahawks, as well as the Head Team Physician for US women’s soccer team, OL Reign.Professor Drezner has been a Deputy Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine since 2016.
Professor Drezner said “BJSM is the international home for sports and exercise medicine research, education, and scholarship. As Editor-in-Chief, I have the privileged responsibility to guide and advance the scientific foundation of our discipline and build upon collaborations and a rising evidence-base which improve health outcomes in our patients and communities.”
The British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) co-owns the journal with BMJ. Commenting on the appointment, Dr Roger Hawkes, BASEM President, said: “We are excited about the appointment of Jon Drezner to this important appointment after the great work done by Karim Khan in establishing the Journal to its present high position. Jon will bring his own direction based on his wide experience and I look forward to a close relationship in helping to continue to consolidate sport and exercise medicine in the modern changing world.”
