Privacy policy for customer research using Ethnio

BMJ is undertaking some research into product development. If you choose to participate, we will need to collect and use some information about you. This notice explains what we want to collect and why. You can find our contact details here if you would like to discuss this with us.

What do BMJ collect and why?

We’d like to collect your name, job role, email address, and phone number. We will need this information to contact you and to arrange for a short interview, and to understand how different groups of people use BMJ’s services and products. In return, we will compensate you with Amazon vouchers. Our ‘lawful basis’ for doing this is that it’s necessary for a contract

We also collect your telephone number so that we can remind you about upcoming sessions by text message. We won't share or reuse your information for other purposes.

Do you share my data?

No, we don’t share your data with anyone else, though we do use a platform called ‘Ethnio’ for the research. Ethnio is a US-based company and we use contractual agreements to ensure that your data is handled properly and not used for any other purpose.

How long will you keep information about me?

Once the research session is over and you have received your compensation, we’ll keep most information about you for six months so that we can understand trends from the research.

What are my rights?

You have rights over your data. You can contact us if you would like to:

  • Have a copy of your personal data
  • Correct inaccurate information about you
  • Erase information about you
  • Restrict how your data is used
  • Object to our use of your data
  • Have your data ported to another organisation

You can find advice about your rights on the website for the Information Commissioner’s Office (the regulator for data protection law in the UK).

If you have any concerns or complaints, we’d like it if you contacted us in the first instance. For people in the EU, we have a representative that individuals in the EU can contact. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office if you’d like to.
