Rapid Response:

MCA responce to 3rgd gen coc

the extra risk of vte with 3rd generation pills is computed at 15 per
100,000 and with a 2% mortality computes to 30 per 10,000,000 per annum.
As a consequence of the MCA action we in GP were inundated with
consultations by worried women and as a result a major change in
contraceptive practice ensued: the perceived safety of the coc was damaged
and 800 extra conceptions occurred.
I believe the MCA action was ill judged and hasty giving little thought to
the implications of it actions to users and service providers alike. In
addition it will do little to encourage industry to invest in hormonal
contraception.
Society accepts lifes occasional risks for biosocial convenience. Do the
members of the Mca suggest we ban the vehicle with 2 - 3000 deaths per
annum?
