Unions will recommend new offer to consultants

The BMA and the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association are to recommend a new offer to their consultant members in England after reaching a revised deal with the government. While the pay uplift for 2023-24 remains at 6%, the offer now includes a 2.85% (£3000) uplift for doctors who have been consultants for four to seven years, who under the original offer received no additional uplift. The deal also includes reform of the Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration (DDRB) and no changes or limits to the way consultants should spend time on teaching, research, and improving services that was included in the previous offer. The prime minister, Rishi Sunak, said, “Ending strike action in the NHS is vital if we want to cut waiting lists and make sure patients are getting the care they deserve. This improved offer demonstrates that we are seeking a fair agreement that is good for consultants, good for patients, and good for the taxpayer.”

A newly released report from the now disbanded Vaccine Taskforce says that the UK needs a vaccine agency to help prepare for future pandemics and ensure domestic resilience and security.
