Workforce: health leaders lament lost chance to secure safe staffing in Health and Care Bill

Doctors’ and health policy leaders have accused the government of squandering an opportunity to guarantee safe staffing in the NHS following a House of Commons vote.

They voiced dismay over the defeat of an amendment to the Health and Care Bill that would have required ministers to reveal the true extent of NHS staffing shortages and plan to deliver a sufficient workforce.

The amendment, proposed by former health secretary and Conservative MP Jeremy Hunt, was rejected on 23 November by 280 votes to 219.
