Barry John Cooper was born in Birmingham. He had an early talent for languages and won a trip to France in a French competition at 16 while at Handsworth Grammar School. He was the first in his family to go to university and took his BA in Russian. To the surprise of his mother he then announced that he wanted to study medicine.

He gained his medical degree from the University of Birmingham in 1961. He had already passed his LRCP and MRCS several months earlier, in order to start working. After …
