Only 8% of GP registrars plan to work full time, finds survey

A BMA survey of GP registrars has painted a bleak picture of the future of general practice, with less than 10% saying they plan to work full time once they are qualified.1
Two thirds of those who responded to the survey (1620 of 2441) reported that they worked beyond their scheduled hours either every day or most days, and nearly three quarters (1778 of 2438) said they were stressed and burnt out.
GP registrars also reported being uncomfortable with the role of physician associates in general practice and the planned expansion of their numbers.
The survey, conducted between 2 and 21 January this year, was completed by 3194 GP registrars, although the BMA could not say how many were invited to take part.
