EDITOR—We as the national clinical leads are concerned that a conflation of issues has clouded the principles in the opt in or opt out debate.1 We believe that patients' clinical information must be appropriately protected. It should be shared with clinicians who genuinely need to know—and no further. Patients may not want some information shared beyond the clinician to whom they have entrusted it.
