New courts offer treatment for drug offenders

    A pilot court scheme offering supervision and treatment rather than incarceration for non-violent drug offenders is under way in Dublin, but without the cooperation of GPs in the area who dispense methadone to heroin addicts.

    It is expected that as many as 100 offenders could be offered an integrated programme of rehabilitation, detoxification, counselling, training, and education under the scheme, which began this week. An independent team of examiners is assessing the project. If it is judged successful, it will be extended to other locations.
