The argument that appropriate expertise cannot be obtained without
using physicians with industry ties to the pharmaceutical industry is
bogus. There are many physicians who work for the government, such as
military physicans, who are not allowed to have industry ties. New
disclosure rules in the United States have resulted in a dramatic drop in
physicians who are members of Speaker Bureaus. The New England Journal of
Medicine may find that it is now very easy to find unbiased physicians.
