Rapid Response:

Reducing Variation in Stroke Care

This article show the variation in stroke care. The variation can be
reduce by re-organising services and using existing capacity more wisely.
In the past decade, care pathways have been increasingly implemented as a
tool in stroke care. The implementation of clinical pathway should reduce
the variation in the process of care. The most recent Cochrane systematic
review showed that care pathways reducing variation, but do not have
benefit on functional outcome and patient's quality of life. The
implementation of clinical pathway was associated with a higher proportion
of patients receiving investigations and a lower risk of developing
certain complications such as infections.
