A poem in honour of the 'industry groups' lobbying the UN Summit on non-communicable diseases [1]

THE SEVEN AGES OF ALCOHOL (adapted from Shakespeare).

The INFANT, with physical and mental development stunted by foetal
exposure;

The SCHOOLCHILD, exposed to maltreatment by drunken adults;

The LOVER, risking rape and sexually transmitted infections when
binge drinking;

The SOLDIER, growing dependent while trying to mask past trauma with
drink;

The JUSTICE, grown fat licensing more and more outlets for sales;

The SHRUNKEN SHANKS of shambling neuropathy and myopathy;

The OBLIVION of alcoholic dementia.
