Re: Retired Members and the GMC

The GMC and Identity Theft.

Sir, - Like many other doctor over 65 I have been faced with the
dilemma of what to do in the light of the General Medical Council's
decision to withdraw my exemption from payment of the Annual Retention
Fee.

If I decide to accept the so-called "voluntary" removal of my name
from the Register I will have to complete the form the GMC sent me which
includes the provision of a large amount of my personal data. If I sign
Section 8, the Final Declaration, I give the GMC and its agents, present
and future, a free hand in respect of what they do with that information
including the right to send it outside the European Economic Area.

This is frightening and so I sought specialist advice. I now have
been told that to complete and sign the form would place me in grave
danger of having my identity stolen.
Can anyone, then, afford to sign it?
