Rapid Response:

Optimise surgical trainees' working time with Wikisurgery scripts

The training of a surgeon in the minutiae of expert surgical
technique requires thousands of hours at the operating table 1. Comparable
expert operative information can be obtained instantly from
Wikisurgery.com, the free on-line surgical encyclopaedia, in the form of
highly detailed operative scripts 2. The scripts also aim to cover all
the what ifs and contain the World Health Organisation pre- and
postoperative safety checks plus a multitude of peroperative safety
checks.

The scripts can be customised to suit any surgeon's preferences. In
addition, the site also contains on-line training programs in basic
surgical and basic laparoscopic skills.
The scripts and skills programs can be studied 24/7, within or outside
normal working hours.

This initiative might well help train surgeons faster and better and
preserve patient safety, despite official working time restrictions.
