Discrimination: a legal challenge needed
The article 'A Discriminating Judgement' by NIgel Hawkes, published
in the British Medical Journal of 19 July 2008,makes eminent sense.
I was however disappointed to see that his conclusions were based on
his own lay assessment of the law and not on a legal opinion. It is to be
hoped that the British Medical Association is seeking its own legal advice
on behalf of its elderly and retired members with a view to challenging
this perverse decision of the Council of the General Medical Council.
If the government can provide winter fuel allowances, free bus passes
and free televison licences for the elderly, while the British Medical
Association and my own Royal College also waive annual subscriptions for
retired members why cannot the General Medical Council acknowledge the
limitations imposed by old age and retirement in a similar manner?
