Medically Fit For Discharge
A significant number of hospital beds are occupied by patients who
are deemed "Medically Fit For Discharge", sometimes for long periods of
time. These patients are generally elderly and awaiting social services/
occupational therapy input/ nursing home placements.
This is a hugely cost-ineffecient situation for the government and a
poor use of finite NHS resources and personnel, as well as a risk to the
patients (such patients are highly susceptible to Hospital Acquired
Infections which occasionally result in an avoidable death).
