Is the scrum really the area of greatest danger?
I have been involved in youth rugby for some time and have become
increasingly concerned about the level of serious injuries to young
players. In my opinion the problem is not the scrum, which is now well
policed by referees, but the tackle area. The boys playing now are so much
bigger and stronger than in my playing days that every tackle contact has
the potential for serious injury. I have no answer to this but would
encourage those looking to improve the safety of the game especially at
youth level to consider the wider issues rather than just the scrum.
