Daniel is to be warmly congratulated for his excellent article. I
wish him well in all he does and trust that he will receive all the
support he needs to effect the transition from student to doctor. His own
experience has clearly made him a very empathic and caring medical student
who will be a considerable asset to our profession. Let us hope too that (
as doctors) we will respond well to the gentle jolt he provides in
describing some of the aspects of discomfort he describes in his
interactions with us.
Despite much good work by some ( including significantly the Career
Focus editorial team) the issue of disability in Medicine has a long way
to go. We must both applaud the courage of our young colleagues in making
contributions like this as well as responding appropriately in using our
influence to ensure that the profession Daniel and others with disability
aspire to join treats him appropriately. We owe this to him and others
like him of whom there are probably far far more ( with visible or
invisible disability) than we appreciate.
