Rapid Response:

Digestive endoscopy as blameless procedure or a preventable risk factor for transmitting Hepatitis C virus?

Sir,

"The results of a large prospective study from Italy now show that
this procedure is blameless." writes C. Martyn (BMJ 2005;330;1411-2.)

Would'nt be digestive endoscopy better considered "... as a
preventable risk factor for transmitting Hepatitis C virus."?

Such was the letter's option in the issue C. Martyn refers to

Actually, our electronic rapid response is published since June, 20
2005, in the "Annals" as a response to R Wenzel and M Edmond's editorial :
Patient-to-Patient Transmission of Hepatitis C Virus Ann Intern Med 2005;
142: 940-1. "Digestive endoscopy as a preventable risk factor for
transmitting Hepatitis C virus."

Should'nt it be brought to the Journal readers attention?

Thanks for time and consideration,
