We found the article by G Mudur encouraging but equally
disappointing. It is encouraging to know that medical care in India is at
par with the best in the world such that overseas patients come across to
receive treatment; albeit in the private healthcare sector. No doubt, this
would bring in valuable foreign exchange. But it remains to be seen if the
benefits of this cash inflow would lead to a boost in investment in the
public health care where, as some of the respondents to this article have
remarked and we have witnessed this first-hand,care is provided on a
budget with minimal resources. The health care needs of the majority of the
population is met through the public sector. In their pursuit of material
prosperity, the powers that be must not deny the masses of equitable
health care provision as the right to health is a fundamental human
right. This development raises ethical and moral issues that are being
ignored but should be addressed by the govermnent and interested parties.
Rapid Response:
But where does this leave the masses?
