Rapid Response:

Listen for yourself

An excellent synopsis on a common problem was presented by by Hannan
S. A. et al. “Tinnitus” (BMJ 2005;330:237). However, they failed to
mention a basic examination technique. In every case of pulsatile one
must auscultate the neck and also listen over the ear and eye with the
stethoscope. Transmitted heart sounds or bruits may be heard which would
help direct further investigations and preclude a blanket and expensive
approach to a relatively common problem.
