Rapid Response:

Doctors were not cut out.

I am in my second year in training in Anaesthetics.I have only now
come to appreciate the diverse nature of this speciality as we are trained
to know something about every other speciality.I think most anaesthetists
will agree with me that the title of this article is inappropriate. The
presence of a Senior Anaesthetists(Associate specialist or Consultant)
will go a long way in ensuring that there is one who is more than
adequately trained to deal with any immediate complications that may arise
from this nurse led DC cardioversion pilot scheme.
I commend the initiative but feel that the article should have stressed
the presence of a highly skilled emergency and peri-operative physician
present at this un -skilled but potentialy life threatening procedure. This
will go a long way in re-assuring patients that the NHS is not all about
reducing waiting times and publishing impressive figures.
