Rapid Response:

Thank you, BMJ, or NetPrint article on cholesterol/Alzheimer got one thousand eReaders in six months

To the editor:

We are writing
to thank BMJ for the great opportunity
to publish our work in BMJ
Clin Med Health Research Netprints
(also see
our earlier related eLetter
).

Today, six months after the publication of our article (entitled
'Brain
Cholesterol pathology is the cause of Alzheimer's disease
') we are
proud to inform BMJ editorial staff and readers that our article
got one thousand online readers (since published
on November 27, 2001).

This is comparable with the statistics of the best downloaded articles
of several online journals. This is despite of the lack of our article
indexing in the bibliography databases, such as PubMed,
BMJ
and HighWire search engines.
Additional credit of the above ClinMed article, however, provides
the citation in the recent
letter to Neurology
, the major specialist journal.

There are several timely contributions at ClinMed, like the one
on the estimation of
the terrorist nuclear explosion in New York Harbor
.

We wish BMJ to consider including
the NetPrints articles into the BMJ
search system
, as it was implemented some time ago for the BMJ
eResponses, and make NetPrints search available through the HighWire search engine. This would add to broadening the NetPrints
readership and contributions
and would hopefully continue to make the
difference in the biomedical publishing system (see
related eLetter
).

The above could be especially important in light of the growing interest
of the biomedical community in NetPrints, as indicated by an increase
in the
number of ClinMed NetPrints articles
.

Our ClinMed articles (see also our
December
17, 2001 ClinMed contribution
) also let us to enjoy designing
our own style of the article presentation as full text .HTMLs, and as a
.PDF reprint. This experience become the basis of our decision to run new
journal Neurobiology of Lipids
without the involvement of any other publisher.

BMJ readers may be interested to see specific
'Help
and tips page
' at Neurobiology of Lipids, that instructs on
'how
to get citations' URL web addresses
'. This advise could be especially
important for BMJ eResponses authors.

Thank you, BMJ for being the best journal we ever knew.
