management and prevention of calf vein thrombosis

I read this comprehensive review with interest. The authors mention
the unreliability of ultrasonography in demonstrating calf vein
thromboses, and I have encountered divided opinion as to whether these
should be treated with anticoagulants at all in the absence of proximal
propagation. Do the authors have a view on this, and on whether there is
any evidence for using aspirin for below-knee thromboses,as is recommended
in some centres, or in prevention, eg before air travel?
