High Floor Jumps- A Potentially Fatal "Fight or Flight" Response to Earthquake Aftershocks in Turkey
On August 17, 1999 at 03:04 am, an earthquake of 7/4 Richter scale
struck the Marmara region of Turkey. Arround 50,000 casualties were
reported of the 20,000 fatalities and 20,000 missing people. The disaster
hit the city when the inhabitants were sleeping and this contributed to
the high number of casualties. The main cause of earthquake related death
was direct trauma of the falling buildings on the paople who were staying
at home. A series of aftershock have horrified the country again and again
but in the parts of Turkey which were not affected people have slowly
started to organize their routine lives again.
Today!!!!! September 13, 1999, it was like a horror film. We shook
again. 5.8 Richter scale Quake had sruck Turkey again. The same as in
Greece. The center was Kocaeli and Adapazari. They say this was another
aftershock but it was really scary. I (P Beard) was on the 5th floor. You
can imagine. The phone lines were horrible. Traffic horrible. Some
buildings went down over there. They say that close to 200 wounded people
were mostly injured as a result of jumping from a high place trying to
rescue themselves. There was a team of controllers, engineers under the
wreck in Golcuk. Still trying to be rescued. Some died while they were
inside their wrecked homes trying to get their stuff out.
Somebody is very
very angry with us...
