An insider's guide to depression

Following the recent articles ( BMJ 27th October 2001 ) by Kay McKall
and an ex-junior hospital doctor on their personal experiences of coping
with suicidal depression, I would like to draw your readers’ attention to
our booklet ‘ Not Just a Cry for Help’

It has been written for those who know someone, either professionally
or as a family member, who is feeling suicidal or has tried to take their
own life, and is available free of charge from our office.

Families and friends often need guidance in how to cope under such
circumstances. They can feel very isolated and afraid of ‘saying and doing
the wrong thing’ This booklet can support the care offered by the general
practitioner. The accompanying poster, displayed in the waiting area, may
encourage more sufferers to disclose their suicidal thoughts to their GP.
