Professionalism and the evolution of nursing as a discipline: a feminist perspective

J Prof Nurs. 1994 Nov-Dec;10(6):357-67. doi: 10.1016/8755-7223(94)90039-6.

Abstract

The evolution of nursing knowledge and nursing as a practice discipline has been stunted by the quest for professionalism. Liberal and socialist feminist theory clarifies the hazards inherent in the masculine institution of professionalism for a predominately female discipline. Socialist feminist theoretical perspectives facilitate a vision of nursing that includes altering social structure such that caring is valued.
