Statistical methods

Survival rates were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log-rank test; survival graphs were truncated when the remaining number of recipients was < 10. Multivariable analyses were performed using Cox proportional hazards models. The results of the multivariable analyses are reported as relative risks (RR) with a corresponding 95% confidence interval or p-value. A RR > 1.0 indicates that the factor was associated with a higher probability of the event; conversely, a RR <

Centers and activity

A total of 3,519 lung transplantation procedures performed in 2010 were reported to the Registry, representing the highest number reported of any year to date (Figure 1). The increased number of procedures has largely been the result of consistent growth in the number of bilateral lung transplants since the mid-1990s, with an unchanged number of single-lung transplants performed annually during this time.

Figure 2 displays average center volume based on transplants performed between January 2000

Survival

Overall median survival (transplant half-life) was 5.5 years, and conditional on survival of at least 1 year, the half-life was 7.7 years (Figure 14). The unadjusted benchmark survival rate was 88% at 3 months, 79% at 1 year, 64% at 3 years, 53% at 5 years, and 30% at 10 years, all of which are the same or similar to last year's report. As in prior reports, survival rates for single and bilateral transplant recipients were again different (Figure 14). However, these data should be interpreted

Centers and activity

There were 94 new adult and pediatric heart-lung transplants performed by participating centers in 2010 (Figure 26). After a decline in reported heart-lung transplants in preceding years, the number of heart-lung transplant procedures has been largely unchanged since 2003, ranging from 86 to 114 transplants reported per year. Among transplants performed between January 1998 and June 2011, 34% of procedures were performed at the 7 centers averaging between 4 and 9 reported procedures per year,
