Systemic Antibiotics for the Treatment of Skin and Soft Tissue Abscesses: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
2019, Annals of Emergency MedicineCitation Excerpt :However, in the largest trial, Talan et al12 also found that antibiotics were associated with significantly improved rates of clinical cure, using a composite outcome defined as the need for a new antibiotic or a new drainage procedure, with a risk difference of 12.2% (95% CI 7.2% to 17.1%) and number needed to treat of 8. Finally, only 2 studies specifically standardized the incision and drainage procedure,12,13 whereas the remainder relied on the clinician’s standard technique.8-11 It is possible that inadequate drainage caused by improper technique confounded the results, although it is unlikely because this is a common procedure and both studies with a standardized drainage procedure significantly favored the antibiotic group.
