    Citation Excerpt :

This was significantly less than the 17.1%, 3-year ipsilateral stroke risk for ECST patients with a symptomatic, severe, carotid stenosis treated medically, and not significantly greater than the 3.1%, 3-year ipsilateral stroke risk for a severe, symptomatic, carotid stenosis after successful endarterectomy. Given the modest benefit results of the asymptomatic endarterectomy trials and the low annual event rates associated with asymptomatic carotid stenosis, the cost-effectiveness of performing surgical endarterectomy for asymptomatic carotid stenosis has been questioned (37). The results of a second, large, multicenter, randomized trial examining endarterectomy in asymptomatic carotid stenosis, The Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial (ACST), currently in progress, are awaited (38).
