    Some authors state that Infants are self-sufficient in iron during the first 6 months and that after this age the requirements for total body iron are increased. The main reasons for identifying children with iron deficiency are psychomotor development delay and the presence of cognitive problems.18–21 Some authors mention that in four-month-old infants, neonatal iron reserves have been halved, so exogenous iron is required to maintain adequate concentrations during the rapid growth phase (between 4 and 12 months of age).1,3
