An extreme outlier was excluded from analysis (total payments for an individual of $240m). For three associations data could not be found for one year of leadership: North American Spine Society, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and Endocrine Society. Zero amounts do not imply missing data, rather that the specific category had no payments. According to the Open Payments website “Research payments can include direct compensation to physicians, funding for research study coordination and implementation, or payments to study participants to cover expenses associated with the study” and “The physician research payments total includes: 1.) Payments where the company making the payment has named a physician as the primary recipient, and 2.) Payments to a research institution or entity where a physician is named as a principal investigator on the research project (i.e. received associated research funding).”
