Hamid Shafi Qazi
Former consultant psychiatrist South East Regional Health Authority (b 25 April 1919; q King Edward Medical College, Lahore (Punjab) 1942; DPM (London) 1973), died from carcinoma of the pancreas on 13 April 2006.Hamid Qazi joined the armed forces in 1942 shortly after qualifying and was promoted to major, with significant medical responsibilities, before being seriously injured in Burma in 1948. Hamid had an active international career in medicine working for the United Nations in Libya in 1966 before settling in England. In 1971 he joined St Lawrence’s Hospital, Surrey, and trained in the psychiatry of learning disabilities.
In 1973 he was appointed consultant psychiatrist, South East Regional Health Authority. In the following years Hamid made important contributions to the psychiatry of learning disabilities, working at Darenth Park Hospital in Kent, the London Borough of Greenwich, and Bexley and Guy’s Hospital, London. He was actively involved in the hospital resettlement programmes and innovative work with paediatric services to develop facilities for disabled children and infants. Hamid received a distinction award in 1980 and retired in 1985.
He enjoyed a long and happy retirement living near Brighton and pursuing his hobbies and interests, which included bridge. He leaves a wife, Eunice; four children; nine grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. [David Brooks]
