Norman Dallas MacRorie
Former general practitioner Brighton (1973-2001), (b Paisley 30 November 1931; q Glasgow 1955), died from motor neurone disease on 16 January 2006.After an early postgraduate interest in neuropsychiatry and in order to avoid call-up for National Service, Norman MacRorie emigrated to the United States. He eventually obtained a board certificate in psychiatry and worked for more than 10 years as a staff psychiatrist at the Creedmoor State Hospital in New York City. Disillusioned by the "anti-psychiatry" movement of Szasz and his fellow Glasgow alumnus R D Laing, he resigned and retrained in general practice in Sussex. In his single-handed practice, he was well loved by patients, who included a former Lord Chancellor. Known for his dedication and dry humour, he worked until his 70th birthday, looking forward to a golfing retirement. Three months later, he developed a foot drop on the course, which was eventually diagnosed as motor neurone disease. He bore this with courage, conducting his own research into its aetiology and comforting fellow sufferers. He converted his by now abandoned surgery premises into a disabled flat and died in bed in his former consulting room. He is survived by his wife, four children (one a general practitioner), and four grandchildren. [Roderick MacRorie]
