David Bonar Mackie
Former general surgeon Salisbury District Hospitals, Wiltshire (b 1936; q Cambridge/Middlesex Hospital, London, 1961; MChir, FRCS), d 25 January 2005.
Bonar’s family were Scottish, and he remained a loyal Scot throughout his life. However, his father moved south to general practice in Exeter, where Bonar was brought up. He went to Sherborne School and then to Pembroke College, Cambridge, followed by the Middlesex Hospital. His postgraduate training took place there and at the Central Middlesex Hospital, where he worked for, among others, L P LeQuesne and Peter Riddle.
He was a true general surgeon. During his years in Salisbury he developed the breast surgery service, established specialised urology, and set up a short stay ward.
He was a most loyal friend and straight and kind to his patients. He was a keen sportsman, particularly enjoying his golf. Also he became medical officer to the Salisbury race course and soon was deeply committed to the sport of kings, owning several more or less successful horses with his friends.
He was greatly loved by many members of the hospital staff. This was reflected in the large number who attended his funeral. He died after a long illness, slowly deteriorating Pick’s disease.
He leaves a wife and three children, one of whom is a dental surgeon. [P M S Gillam]
