Norman Harry Brodie
Former general practitioner East Sussex (b Surbiton 1929; q Liverpool 1952), d 5 January 2005.Dr Norman Brodie was a hard working, popular, and respected general practitioner. For 30 years he was an integral part of a practice covering Saltdean, Rottingdean, Woodingdean, and Ovingdean before retiring more than 10 years ago as senior partner. Dr Brodie is still fondly remembered by many of his patients in the four Deans.
He was a member of the O’Hara, McGhie, and Brünjes partnership, which has surgeries in Longridge Avenue, Saldean, Little Crescent and Meadow Parade, Rottingdean, and The Ridgeway, Woodingdean.
Dr Brodie would regularly undertake three clinics a day followed by extensive home visits and on-call duty through the night, seeing it as nothing more than his expected commitment to the community.
His early career was in the Royal Navy. He retained his naval links throughout his life with a commission in the Royal Naval Reserve and was also involved with the Royal British Legion.
Dr Brodie thrust all his energies into his medical practice. As senior partner he created two purpose-built, modern surgeries, which are his legacy to Rottingdean and Saltdean.
He worked incredibly hard and was always willing to provide a personal service to all his patients. He was an excellent doctor, first class diagnostician, and I can never remember him being ill. He was a significant influence on all the young doctors who were fortunate enough to work alongside him.
After retiring in 1994 he moved first to Tenterden, Kent, then to Salisbury, Wiltshire.
He was in hospital in Bournemouth when he died suddenly. A family funeral has already been held.
He was happily married to Jeanne, who survives him. The couple have two daughters, Alison and Louise, and four grandchildren, Katherine, Anthony, Emma, and Jeremy. [Harry Brünjes]
