Ieuan Lynn Richard Evans
Former general practitioner Rhymney, Gwent (b Bihar, India, 1917; q Cardiff
1940; MBE, JP), d 22 November 2003.
After active service in Burma with the 42nd Squadron, Ieuan returned with
obstetrics in mind, but found the challenge of practice in the valleys of
South Wales totally absorbing, contributing for 46 years until 1991. This
was largely in partnership with his brother Alun and included surgery at
Redwood Memorial Hospital. Long working hours were accompanied by the deep
affection of his patients.
Ieaun’s hospitality and generosity were legendary. He supported the St
John Ambulance and the Burma Association, and was a magistrate. His interests
were cricket, rugby, and the stock exchange. He accepted his cruelly inactive
retirement with dignity. He died 11 years after a cerebellar stroke that
he suffered postoperatively. Predeceased by his wife, Gwyneth, who died in
1988, he leaves four children (two doctors) and seven grandchildren. [R
