Edward Granville Woodchurch Clarke
Former general practitioner Binfield, Berkshire (b 1914; q Oxford/St Thomas’s Hospital, London, 1940; MC), died from ischaemic vascular disease on 30 April 2003.
During the second world war he served with the 46th battalion West African Rifles in Burma, where he was awarded the Military Cross for bravery, rescuing casualties under fire. Returning from the war, he and his young wife, Patricia (a radiographer), settled in Ruthin, Denbighshire, where he built up a thriving singlehanded practice. He enjoyed the life of a rural GP, and his Land Rover was really needed for visiting remote farms, especially in the severe winter of 1947.
After 10 years he and the family moved to Binfield in Berkshire, where he once again built up a singlehanded practice in the village. He became an active member of various village organisations and, despite being on call so often, managed to pursue his hobbies of wood-turning, furniture and clock-repairing, and also, together with his wife, creating a beautiful garden. He enjoyed 20 years of retired life until Parkinson’s disease affected his mobility. His bravery and acceptance of his condition amazed all who met him. Predeceased by his wife, he leaves three daughters (one a GP) and eight grandchildren (one an anaesthetist). [Carol French]
