Former medical director, regional medical officer, and consultant Sussex (b Renfrew, Scotland, 1929; q Edinburgh 1952; DTM&H Liverpool, DPH, DIH, MFOM, MFCH), d 28 December 2003.Having qualified at Edinburgh University, where he was president of the union, Bill worked as a houseman in the neonatal unit of Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion in Edinburgh and then as house surgeon to Professor Sir James Learmouth at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. In 1953 he left for Malaya, where he spent the next 15 years as the senior partner of a private practice specialising in preventive medicine and advising the government there on medical and health matters.
On his return to the United Kingdom, he worked as a fellow in community medicine for the Scottish Home and Health Department and then as deputy principal medical adviser, Livingstone New Town, before taking up a variety of posts in the pharmaceutical industry over the next nine years, first in Holland as a clinical trials coordinator for Organon, and then back in the UK as head of medical and R&D operations for Fisons, and then as medical director for Armour Pharmaceuticals.
Prior to retirement, Bill was, for nine years, the SE regional medical officer for the Post Office in Brighton.
After retirement in 1989, Bill had a number of books and articles published on stress prevention and management, and set up a charity, SALT (Stress and Life Trust), a consultancy giving seminars and lectures to employees of large corporations on how to deal with stress.
He was a committed Christian and a keen tennis player.
Predeceased by his first wife, he leaves his second wife, three sons, a daughter, and two grandchildren. [Ranald T I Munro]
