Keith Merritt
Former general practitioner Caterham, Surrey (b 1936; q Leeds 1961; DRCOG,
MRCGP), died on 24 May 2003 from complications following aortic aneurysm
repair.
John was always involved wherever there was an exciting or interesting
activity, professionally and personally. Having qualified at Leeds, meeting
his wife Ann in the university climbing club, he came down to earth in
Surrey, building up a practice from two doctors with 2000 patients to six
doctors and over 12 500 patients. He became one of the first GP trainers
in East Surrey, and was committed to support the development of medical
students and young doctors. His work was recognised both in general practice
and in hospitals, where he was care of the elderly hospital practitioner
at Caterham Dene and at East Surrey Hospitals, as well as medical officer
for Caterham School and Caterham Army Barracks. His spare time was devoted
to sailing, walking, gardening, and skiing. Following his retirement, he
moved to Salcombe in Devon to enjoy his family and his activities. He leaves
Ann, his two children, and three grandchildren. [John V Howard]
