Hugh Thelwall-Jones had a remarkable 34 year career in medicine and administrative medicine.

He was born in Liverpool, the eldest son of Albert Thelwall Jones, a physician and pioneer in industrial medicine, and Sadie Wendt, a teacher. Hugh’s academic journey, which started at David House and Liverpool College, led him to Jesus College, Cambridge, where he completed both the part I natural science tripos and the part II law tripos. His passion for obstetrics and gynaecology was ignited during his clinical studies at Middlesex Hospital.

After qualification he returned to his home town for training under the guidance of Norman Jeffcote. Following junior roles at Liverpool teaching and regional hospitals, Hugh became senior registrar at the University Hospital of Wales. In …
