Politis and colleagues raise concerns regarding changes to recruitment and “levelling down” allocation of academic foundation posts, stating that preference informed allocation is a “cheap fix” when aiming to widen participation.1

We agree. “Levelling up” can be implemented in medical schools and foundation training, allowing supportive promotion of research in a training environment.
