Vaping: US FDA has issued more than 1200 warning letters over unauthorised tobacco products

The US Food and Drug Administration has issued more than 1200 warning letters since October 2020 for the manufacture, sale, or distribution of unauthorised tobacco products such as e-cigarettes.

More than 675 letters have been sent to manufacturers and 550 to retailers, resulting in most recipients correcting their violations, the agency said.

However, it has also had to file civil money penalty complaints against more than 55 manufacturers and more than 100 retailers for the manufacture or sale of unauthorised tobacco products. On top of this the FDA has sought injunctions against seven manufacturers of unauthorised e-cigarette products and seized more than $700 000 (£550 000; €645 000) worth of products.
