James Kyle, former consultant surgeon and chairman of the BMA Representative Body, has died in Wester Ross at the age of 98.

Born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, he was educated at Ballymena Academy. He studied medicine at Queen’s University Belfast and graduated with a gold medal in surgery. He loved Ulster, particularly the pastorally idyllic Glens of Antrim and its coastline.

He worked with Harold Rogers at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, who mentored his research and had a notable influence on his career.
