Hans Ludwig Frankel was born to Viennese parents, in the Baltic city of Danzig. Shortly after Anschluss, with his parents and three siblings he came through Switzerland to the UK in the spring of 1938. Committed to their new country, the family members spoke only English—even in the home—from the moment of their arrival. Early school reports describe a happy but not academically inclined child who did not begin to read or write until he was 9 years old. On leaving school, he secured a place at University College Hospital, the first in his family to study medicine.
