Nicholas Henry Dyer was born in Brentwood, Essex, on 8 March 1937 and was educated at Clifton College. He studied medicine at Cambridge (matriculation Clare College 1955), as his father Ronald had done (Clare 1919), and outside study he was particularly fond of jazz, with any spare time playing drums in a variety of local and college bands.

An occasional sportsman, he would happily turn out for the college’s second teams at cricket and rugby when needed.

He started work in 1961, doing both house jobs at the London Hospital, followed by another house physician appointment at Royal United Hospital, Bath, before moving up to senior house officer in medicine. Nicholas then returned to the London Hospital …
