Consultants in England set new strike dates

Consultants in England have announced plans to take two further days of strike action on 19 and 20 September if the government continues not to agree to talks on pay, the BMA said. Industrial action is already planned for 24 and 25 August, with cover based on “Christmas Day” levels. Vishal Sharma, chair of the BMA’s Consultants Committee, wrote in a letter to England’s health and social care secretary, Steve Barclay, “Given this dispute is about consultant pay and the impact this is having on the NHS, we were . . .very disappointed by your suggestion that you would only meet to discuss non-pay issues.” (Full story doi:10.1136/bmj.p1829)

Bramall-Stainer is elected chair of GP Committee

The BMA’s General Practitioners Committee in England elected Katie Bramall-Stainer as its chair after a vote of no confidence in its previous chair, Farah Jameel. Bramall-Stainer has been chief executive of Cambridgeshire Local Medical Committee (LMC) and chair of the UK Conference of LMCs since 2019. She was previously a medical director for North West London at Londonwide LMCs and a partner in a general practice in Hertfordshire. Bramall-Stainer said that the committee’s focus would be on safeguarding the survival of general practice. (Full story doi:10.1136/bmj.p1810)
