Re: Medical doctor apprenticeships are coming to the UK
Dear Editor
There is very little information currently available on the apprenticeship scheme which is to be launched soon.
In addition to curriculum, placements and teaching concerns, there is genuine fear that apprentice doctors will have no time available to study the vast curriculum if employers expect a certain number of hours worth of work in return for the salary and fees paid by them.
The information available on Health Education England website initially stated that there will be no formal exams and apprentice doctors will be graded by assignments completed and essays compiled in their portfolio.
This has now changed and the website states that the assessments will be robust and all apprentice doctors will be expected to undertake exams similar to current medical students.
Will the qualifications gained through this scheme be recognised abroad-- if not, then will potential applicants be only able to work in the NHS. In this way, will we be paying back with labor the fees paid for the qualifications for years to come.
