Peru’s health minister resigns as country reels from worst dengue outbreak in history

Peru’s minister for health stepped down last week as authorities struggled to contain the worst outbreak of dengue fever in the country’s history.

The mosquito borne tropical disease has infected at least 137 539 people and killed 223 according to the Pan American Health Organization, giving Peru the highest dengue mortality rate in the Americas.1 The infection tally will likely reach twice the 74 000 infections recorded in 2017—the country’s previous record outbreak.
