Nigerian politician, his wife, and a doctor are guilty of organ trafficking to UK

A wealthy Nigerian senator, his wife, and a doctor “middleman” have been found guilty of organ trafficking after bringing an impoverished market trader to the UK, intending to use one of his kidneys for a transplant.

Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy president of the Nigerian Senate, was convicted of plotting to arrange the transplant for his daughter, Sonia, at the Royal Free Hospital in London, in the first prosecution for commercial organ donation under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act.

Ekweremadu, a former practising lawyer, his wife Beatrice Nwanneka, and Obinna Obeta, a doctor who advised them, were found guilty of conspiring to traffic the donor for the purpose of exploiting him. …
